What about Preparing a Legal Document Without a Lawyer?

There are services on the Internet that advertise the furnishings of legal documents for a lower cost than what a lawyer would charge. The question is, are they cost effective? Put another way, are you saving money upfront only to be confronted with higher costs and risks down the road?

Using such services is generally better then drafting a legal document, such as a will, a contract, or deed by yourself. However, unless your needs are simple, you run the risk of leaving something important out, or preparing a document that is unclear or ambiguous, which may negate the result that you are seeking; and could lead to a lawsuit.

It may be that the best use of such sites are to make you aware, so that you can prepare a checklist of what you want, or better yet, call your attention to some important matter that you were either unaware of or had not thought about.

The purpose of preparing a legal document is to obtain protection; to assure that your wishes are carried out in a clear, concise, and all-encompassing manner. Alas, though paying legal fees is expensive, it usually is the better way to go.
